Ghana's Rice Imports Hit $560 M in FY23

Food security is a major concern in Ghana. The country spent the most on the food grains imports. As per the WTO reports, Ghana's economy is merely 7.7 billion US Dollars in 2022. According to the Ghana import export data records, the major grain imports by Ghana are rice, wheat, pulses, maize and soybeans. Rice is the Ghana's 3rd most imported product

For the fiscal year 2022, there was a hefty amount of rice imports done by Ghana. Ghana's rice consumption in 2022 was around 1.2 million metric tonnes. As per the Ghana import data, the total rice exports were around 560 million US Dollars in 2022. The top countries by rice exports to Ghana were Vietnam, Thailand, China, India and Pakistan.


Wheat is another major import commodity of Ghana. As per our Ghana customs data, the total wheat imports from Ghana in the financial year 2022 were around 350 million US Dollars. The major wheat exporting countries were Canada, Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine and France. Experts suggest that Ghana is looking to do record wheat imports in 2023.


In 2021, Ghana did comprehensive amounts of soy imports. Around 1.5 million us dollars imports were done during FY 2021. Burkina Faso, Togo, United States, Netherlands and Brazil were the top soy exporting countries to Ghana.


On the other hand, our Ghana export data suggests that the soybean exports were 24 million us dollars. The top import markets for Ghana's soybean were Turkey, India, Vietnam, United States and Italy. 


Ghana's corn imports in the Financial year 2022 were around 27 million dollars. The top corn exporters to Ghana were Argentina, United States, South Africa, Turkey and Thailand. Pulses are an important import category of Ghana. Although, the pulses imports declined in 2021.  The top pulses exporting countries to Ghana were India, Nigeria and Benin.


Oilseeds, fats and oils were among the top imported goods in Ghana. For the financial year 2022, the pulses imports were around 364 million US Dollars. Australia and the United States were the major export partners for edible oils to Ghana.

For the financial year 2021, Ghana did a significant amount of Tropical Fruits imports and exports.  As per the Ghana trade data, the tropical fruits exports accounted for 72 million us dollars while the imports were mere 5.5 million us dollars.


The fastest growing import markets for Ghana's tropical fruits imports were the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, Morocco and France. On the other hand, the imports were from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Spain, India and South Africa. These were basically, grapes, citrus fruits, apricots, cherries, peaches, pears, etc.

Ghana's government is working to improve its standard of living and provide better food security to its citizens. The government has invested in boosting its agricultural exports.
