China-Kazakhstan 2023 Trade Outlook

From the past few years, Kazakhstan has emerged as the major trading partner of China. One of the main reasons behind this is Kazakhstan’s rich natural gas and oil reserves. According to Kazakhstan import export data records, the bilateral trade between China and Kazakhstan rose by 23% in 2022. 

The total trade value was estimated to be around 31 Billion US Dollars. Last year imports and exports were worth 25 billion Dollars. Both the nations are planning to reach 35 billion US Dollars bilateral trade by the end of 2030.

For the fiscal year 2022, In the first quarter, Kazakhstan's top trading partners were China (2.5 Billion USD), Turkey (1.25 Billion USD), South Korea (960 Million USD), Uzbekistan (834 Million USD) and USA, Canada (615 Million USD).


The top traded goods to these countries were mainly Crude oil, Wheat, Cathode copper, iron ore, aluminium, hydrocarbons, ferroalloys, zinc and fertilizers. Crude oil was the most exported goods by Kazakhstan globally. 


Kazakhstan imports from China


According to the Kazakhstan import data, China imports from Kazakhstan were around 11 billion US Dollars with over 30% increase in 2022. China was the major import trading partner of Kazakhstan with over 21% share of total imports.


The top commodities by imports were computers, auto parts, tires and apparel clothing. As per Kazakhstan customs data, clothing and textiles imports were up by 23% in 2022. While Machinery, Rubber and Plastics imports increased by 21% and 44% significantly. Coal Group, Triesdorf Agro, Caspian Develop and Korvet Limited were the top import export companies of Kazakhstan.

As per the Kazakhstan export data reports, there was a 34% increase in exports from Kazakhstan to China in 2022. China imports from Kazakhstan alone contributed around 15% of the total Kazakhstan export volume. Crude Oil, Refined Copper, Natural Gas, Inorganic Chemicals and Ferroalloys were the top 5 exports of Kazakhstan to China. 


Crude Oil was the most exported product of Kazakhstan to China with exports worth 4 billion US Dollars. Other major contributors were Copper Alloys (2 Billion USD), Natural Gas (1 Billion USD). 

The other major exports from Kazakhstan are cathode copper, ferrous metal scrap, unalloyed aluminium, wheat, unalloyed zinc, metal sheets, sunflower seed, dehydrated lentil and zinc sheet metal. The Kazakhstan government is planning to extend its oil pipeline to enhance natural gas production.
